I've been wanting to try a modular/flip up helmet to ease communication on group rides, and I have been hearing good things about HJC. The IS-Max is a great price, and it tries hard, but I feel it has a few shortcomings that are easily fixed, if HJC wants to improve their product.
The face shield is flimsy. On my Shoei helmet, a one finger flick is all that is required to close the face shield. On the HJC, the shield flexes and binds, and requires a lot of finessing to get it closed. This is not something I want to be screwing with when I'm under way.
The face shield has some optical distortion in it. Other manufacturers have figured out how to make face shields with no distortion- HJC should be able to as well.
Snugging the chin strap is unnecessarily awkward. The "D" rings are stamped out of sheet metal instead of being formed from round wire. They have enough of an edge to them that you can't pull the chin strap tight once it's fed through both rings. Annoying.
The retractable sun visor is not dark enough. Since it's removable, HJC should at the very least offer darker tints as replacement visors.
The chin bar feels weak. There's a lot of creaking and flexing when I pull the helmet down over my head by the chin bar. This may be typical for modular helmets- I don't know, this is the first I've tried.
On the plus side, the helmet is comfortable, reasonably quiet, and has a decent finish. The removable liner is nice.
I have not looked at HJC's more expensive helmets to see if they are any better.

I have been using ISMAX the past three months, bought new from helmet city. i received the product i ordered quickly and accurately. i really like the modular design, especially the slide visor, great to have and easy to use. I am having odor from the liner that i have to determine how to wash and dry, i think the liner is removable but i haven't washed it yet so cannot comment on that aspect, it does need to be washed regularly in hot weather, depending on use. I like the helmet very much and highly recommend. i got the white color due to the safety of its visibility.
