Great Helmet and Good Service, 6.26.2010

I ordered this helmet as a summer alternative to my Shoei Multitec, which is heavy and hot. Opening the face shield adds to turbulence. This helmet is everything I had hoped for. I have worn it on several rides since its prompt delivery last week, and it continues to perform well. Shoei helmets run true to your head measurements--in other words, if you measure, say, 24" buy that size. It should fit snugly and stay that way. It's also important to check the vents before each ride so that they are in the position the rider wishes.

I bought two Shoei RJ Platinum-R helmets. According to sizing chart provided a 6 7/8 - 7 = small, and they were too tight. Sent them back and they were promptly replaced with a size medium. My wife says the medium fits he fine but I still experienced a tight fit and ordered the next size smaller cheek pads which helped some. It still fits tight around my forehead after a long ride. I should have a large, but that isn't what the sizing chart calls for. Other than a tight fit, I love the helmet.

I am giving this review from a "Harley Touring Bike" perspective because what I write may not matter to "other" riders. The good news and the bad news. First the good news. The helmet is very lightweight and looks very well made so I feel very confident that it is one of the safest helmets available in it's style class. I specifically looked for a SNELL rating because a DOT rating is just a minimum standard issue. Now, the bad news. The helmet doesn't buffet the air very well. My previous helmet didn't have this issue so I think it may have something to do with it's styling. My only other complaint is the cheek pads protrude a little further than i like (and further than my previous helmet). I tend to feel that the protrusion is a distraction on my peripheral vision. In time I will get accustomed to the extra cheek pad and I am sure that feeling will subside. All in all I am happy with my purchase.
